This short walk took me from Minden Road (Opposite the Singapore Botanical Gardens) to Harding Road and into Dempsey Road where Dempsey Hill is located. The whole area were formerly a British Army Barrack with its own chapel and after the British left, part of the area was used by the Singapore Armed Forces as their Central Manpower Base (CMPB) before it shifted out in 1989 to Depot Road. As it was a former British Army Barracks, the buildings in the area reflects the British Colonial design.
Located at the junction of Miden and Harding Road is the St George’s Church. Originally built in 1860s, it served as a Garrison church but the present building was subsequently rebuilt in 1911 for the British soldiers stationed in Singapore. In 1971, St George’s Church became a civilian Anglican Church
The Jim Thompson Thai Restaurant is located at 45 Minden Road . Jim Thompson was an American architect who helped revised the Thai Silk industry in the 1950s and 60s. On Easter of 1967, he disappeared mysteriously when going for a walk in Cameron Highlights in Malaysia.
The former White Chapel is now home to The White Rabbit at 39C Harding Road
There are old cable cars located at the site of The White Rabbit
Approaching Dempsey Hill
Dempsey Hill currently is home to Food and Beverages establishments and several art galleries. You get a mix of Asian and Western Cuisine around the area. While visiting Dempsey Hill, do take the time to admire the old colonial buildings peppered around the area.
