Trekking down the KTM Railway in Singapore Part 2

In my last post, I trekked from Tanglin Halt to Old Holland Road on the KTM Railway and this is the continuation of the journey which took me from Old Holland Road to 10 Mile Junction. It is another day and this time more prepared for what lies ahead.

Old Holland Road in the Day

I am not sure what to make out of this. A grown man with his female toy companion along the railway.

Caught in the Act ?

A long road ahead

Approaching the Bukit Timah Railway Station

The Bukit Timah Railway Station is one of the rest point for fellow trekkers who walked on the railway

The excavators are in place to remove the tracks

This rail crossing was completed in the year 1871. That over 140 years old and still standing. This is one of the two rail crossings which would be preserved.

This overhead railway crossing crosses both the Bukit Timah Road and Dunearn Road into the Rifle Range Road.

Condominiums along Rifle Range Road

Guy with his female doll again. Not sure how he got here so fast

A Proposal along the railway ?

Taking refuge from the hot sun

Under the Pan Island Expressway (PIE)

Houses along Hindhede Road which was named after Jens Hindhede who was a businessman and tea farmer in Singapore and Malaysia between the 1920s and 1930s.

Crossing along Hindhede Road which was completed in 1868

Approaching the 2nd overhead rail crossing near Rail Mall which was completed in 1861.

This crosses Upper Bukit Timah Road

Crossing over Hillview Road

The Salvation Army’s Praisehaven on the left, the Methodist School of Music in the middle and the Trinity Theological College on the right

Can you spot the long tail macaque monkey on the left track ?

KTM Crossing in front of Mindef

Disused KTM Living Quarters

Farm Land probably belonging to KTM

Sri Murugan Hill Temple and the Bukit Panjang Khek Community Guild Building

Ten Mile Junction in the distance

That concludes my journey along the KTM railway. Hope you enjoy it.

Trekking down the KTM Railway in Singapore Part 1

For a period of two weeks after KTM ceased operating from the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) allowed the public to walk along most of the 26km of the railway line between July 1st and 17th 2011. A 3km stretch from Rifle Range Road and Rail Mall continued to be opened till July 31st 2011. After which, the track removal process begins which was completed sometime in November 2011.

As this would be the first and last opportunity to actually walk on the railway tracks, I decided to jump on the chance like probably many others in Singapore. Entering into the track was tricky because much of the tracks was located along the expressway or valley. However, I remember there was a level crossing point somewhere within Tanglin Halt Road and thought I entered from there. Armed with my camera, drinking water and a good but not so new pair of shoes, I began my journey which eventually took me to Old Holland Road as it was getting dark and on a subsequent trip from Old Holland Road to 10 Mile Junction Shopping Centre near Bukit Panjang Road. It was not easy to walk on the tracks or on the gravel stones.

My Journey begins here

Another created path walk from Tanglin Halt

One of the building at One North at Buona Vista

This lies someone’s pet dog. One of the many causality of the railway

Abandoned Building near One North

MRT Train passing the Buona Vista MRT Station

Someone must be very frustrated with his television set

Someone in Singapore must love Sabah very much to write that. I swear it wasn’t me

I walked this path many times but I am usually looking down rather than looking up

Another causality – this time it is a cat

Crossing Ghim Moh Estate

The Ulu Pandan Community Club

Cold Storage at Jelita

I ended my walk at Old Holland Road as it was getting dark and there is no lights along the railway. Besides I do not know where the next exit would be.

Stay Tune for Part 2 of this journey.
