Tranquil Bedok Reservoir (Singapore)

on January 20, 2012

Bedok Reservoir has gotten quite a bad rap lately due to its mysterious lure for the negative lately with 6 suicides and 2 attempted suicides within the last 6 months and now with the midges infestation around the reservoir and the surrounding housing estate. I thought it be best to just do a more positive post about the place.

Bedok Reservoir was a former sand quarry site up to 1972 during Singapore’s rapid urbanization project and was subsequently dammed up in 1986 to create a reservoir for Singapore’s water needs. As Bedok Reservoir is located within housing estate, the National Park went about opening up the reservoir for recreation purposes which includes a jogging track around the 4.3km parameters of the reservoir. Other activities within the park includes kayaking, canoeing, fishing and sailing. In fact, in 2004, the HSBC Wakeboard World Cup was held there.

In the morning and evening, you will find residents and students from the nearby Temasek Polytechnic enjoying walks or a jog around the park.
